Sermon Notes:
Contemporaries: Joel, Amos (Israel) , Micah (Judah), Jonah, Obadiah and Isaiah (Judah)
Hosea prophesied during the reign of all these kings (59-70 years):
Kings of Judah:
- Uzziah (52--God smote him with leprosy—did what was right with the LORD)
- Jotham (16 – 2nd year of reign of Pekah—did what was right with the LORD)
- Ahaz (16--17th year of Pekah—walk in the way of the kings of Israel—made his son pass through the fire according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel; attacked by Pekah, king of Israel and Syria; become servant to the King of Assyria, copies altar from Damascus and puts it in the House of the LORD)
- Hezekiah (29—3rd year of Hoshea—did what was right with the LORD)
Kings of Israel: (…departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.)
- Jeroboam II, the son of Joash (41--+ )
- Zechariah (6 months--assassinated—end of the four generations of the reign of Jehu)
- Shallum (one month--assassinated after one month)
- Menahem (10--bribed the King of Assyria—Pul—by paying him 1,000 talents of silver by taking 50 shekels of silver (mina) from each wealthy man in Israel; 60 minas = 1 talent (60,000 men)
- Pekahiah (2 – assassinated in the palace in Samaria)
Pekah (20 – Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria took 7 cities + all the land of Naphtali; joined with King of Syria and fought Jerusalem; Syria captured Elath (on Gulf of Aquaba);
King Ahaz send Tiglathpileser silver and good that was found in the house of the LORD and copied an altar from Damascus and put it in the House of God; went to war against Judah with Syria; killed 120,000 soldiers in one day (USA lost in WWI 116,708 troops); took as prisoners women, sons and daughters: 200,000 and took them to Samaria; Obed the prophet came and said to them: Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, He hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage that teacheth up unto heaven.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you, but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?
Now hear me therefore, and deliver the captive again, which ye have taken captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.
Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim….stood up against them that came from the war,
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas we have offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation.”—2 Chronicles 28:6-14
So they clothed them and took them to Jericho, then they returned to Samaria.
Edomites smote Judah and carried away captives.
Philistines also defeated several cities of the Judahites.
Remember Ahaz had made GOD mad, because he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus;
Pekah assassinated.
- Hoshea (9 – Shalmaneser, king of Assyria was given presents but later he made a league with the king of Egypt and no longer gave him presents; the king of Assyria bound him in prison and them after a three year siege captured Samaria. He captured the remaining House of Israel and the 46 fortified cities of Judah; then the king of Assyria went to Jerusalem where all the remaining people of Judah had fled).
Hosea was a mainly a prophet to the House of Israel—a few prophetic messages about the House of Judah.
He was instructed by GOD to marry a woman of whoredoms: Gomer
- Son – God said to name him “Jezreel”—Scatter – the House of Israel will cease to be a kingdom. His was not named “Israel” which implies dominion, but was named “Jezreel” which implies dispersion. Some say that these last two children were illegitimate:
- Daughter – God said to name her “Loruhamah” – no more mercy.
- Son – God said to name him “Loammi” – no more my people, and I will not be your God.
After the birth of his daughter (the 2nd of 3 children), GOD says that He will have NO more mercy upon the House of Israel, that He will utterly take them away—but God gives Hosea this miraculous prophecy:
“But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD, their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses nor by horsemen.” – verse 7.
The house of Israel is no longer a nation…divorced by GOD. No more mercy; is no longer the people of GOD…
I must make mention how disruptive this is to modern church world theology:
Rapture of Gentile church----Tribulation----Millennial Kingdom
Coming of the Antichrist-----7 years covenant--Satan bound with the Jews--- for 1000 years
(Pre--Mid--Post)
Jews rejected their Savior therefore they are put in a ( ) of history until the rapture of the Church
Two Roman Catholic Jesuits started both the Preterism and Futuralistic viewpoints against the Protestant Reformation—Roman Catholic Church was known as the great whore—The Geneva Bible with it notes written by many of the Protestant Reformers proves this point.
It Is totally false:
- It was the House of Israel that was divorced about 700 years before the coming of their sacrifice for sins—all the dead were in the center of the earth on one of two sides—paradise or hell.
- What could they do to put themselves back into the covenant that God had made with their fathers—Nothing.
- What could they do to put themselves back into the marriage of GOD—Nothing.
- They were without hope; without GOD, without Christ; they were far off.
- Their only possibility of salvation was the fulfillment of Passover and Pentecost—it was out of their hands—it had to be predestined by our GOD.
- House of Israel--Divorce--Crucifixion/Resurrection--back into the covenant
But we are going to talk about Hosea’s miraculous prophecy about Judah:
There are three books of the bible which tell of the fulfillment of this prophecy:
- 2 Chronicles
- 2 Kings and
- 3. Isaiah
Isaiah 36:1; states that in the 14th year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came up against all the fortified cities of Judah (46) and took them.
10 years previous he came up against Israel—it took 3 years to capture Samaria and to take it; they refused to obey the words that Moses commanded them; they would not hear them nor do them.
This is when Israel suffered being divorced from GOD, cut off from the covenant of marriage…
Assyria’s first invasion of Judah:
Hezekiah, after all the fortified cities of Judah and told them, told the king of Assyria: saying, Withdraw from me; that which thou puttest on me will I bear: 300 talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
Remember: Haman offer to pay the king of Persia—10,000 Talents of silver (over 33 times more).
“And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasuries of the king’s house.
At that time did Hezekiah strip the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah, king of Judah, had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.”—2 Kings 18:15, 16.
King Hezekiah gave a speech to the people:
“Be strong and courageous; be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who are with him; for there are more with us than with him.
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD, or God, to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah, king of Judah.”--2 Chronicles 32:7, 8.
Assyria’s second invasion of Judah:
King of Assyria sent a large army to Jerusalem: King Hezekiah sent three men to him. The representative that the king of Assyria sent, Rabshakeh said:
What confidence is this in which thou trustiest? On whom do you trust that thou revel against me?
Don’t trust in Egypt; and don’t trust in the LORD your GOD for what about the altar that was taken away.
The three men replied to the man doing the speaking to not talk in the language that the men on the wall could understand; speak in the Aramaic language.
This made Rabshakeh mad: and Rabshakeh arose and said in a very loud voice:
“Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he shall not be able to deliver you. Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, the LORD will surely deliver us. This city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.” – Isaiah 36:14-15.
Hearken not to Hezekiah, make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me…eat your own food, until I come and take you away to a land like your own land…beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, the LORD will deliver us. And then he names all the gods who he had defeated.
Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
The three men answer him not a word, for they obeyed King Hezekiah’s saying.
They came to King Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. King Hezekiah tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the ………….house of the LORD.
Sent the three men to Isaiah; they were clothed in sackcloth. And they tell Isaiah that Hezekiah says: This is a day of trouble, and of rebuke and of blasphemy…
It may be the LORD, thy God, will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria, his master, hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD, thy God, hath heard, wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.
Isaiah tells the three men of King Hezekiah:
Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Behold, I will send a wind upon him, and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”—Isaiah 37:6-7.
Sennacherib’s blasphemous letter:
Rabshakeh heard that there was war with Libnath and Ethiopia; he sent messenger to Hezekiah, saying:
Let not thy God, in whom thou trustiest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria….Have the gods of the nations delivered them that my fathers have destroyed…
Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
And Hezekiah prayer unto the LORD, saying:
“O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, who dwellest between the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.
Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent to reproach the living God.
Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
And have cast their gods into the fires; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore, they have destroyed them.
Now therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.”—Isaiah 37:16-20.
Then Isaiah sent unto Hezekiah, saying,
“Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib, king of Assyria, This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him:
He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD>
For I will defend this city to save it for mind own sake, and for my servant David’s sake. “—Isaiah 37:33-35.
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand (185,000); and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were dead.—Isaiah 37:36.
Hosea 1:7: “But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD, their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.”
And it happened just like Hosea said.
Judah:
- Lost 120,000 soldiers
- 200,000 women, sons and daughters take captive and returned
- 46 fortified cities taken
- Edomites took captive some Judahites
- Philistines defeated several town in Judah
Then they were told:
- Jerusalem would be saved w/o any fighting on their part
- Repented in sackcloth
- Prayer in the House of God
- Trusted and relied on the GOD of Israel
