Twas the Day After Christmas
The Wake-up Herald
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. Romans 13:11-14

'Twas the Day After Christmas
by Robert McCurry
The ‘Christmas season’ may be six months in length leading up to ‘Christmas Day’, but the Christmas ‘spirit’, ‘season’, and ‘day’ are discarded and forgotten as quickly as the paper on the gifts; another ‘Christmas’ season and day—the most popular season and day of the year are now history; the mythical ‘Christmas spirit’ has quickly vanished from homes, churches, and retail stores; decorations, wreaths, candles, lights, trinkets, and the ‘little baby Jesus’ manger scenes are all packed away in an out-of-sight storage area until another ‘Christmas.’
'Twas the day after Christmas
And all through the town
The stockings weren't hung by the chimney anymore,
And boxes and wrapping covered the floor.
The kitchen was covered from floor to ceiling
With enough dirty dishes to set Mother reeling.
The children were whining over what they didn't get
And rather than sharing, they were throwing a fit!
The malls were bustling with post Christmas shoppers
Searching for bargains on racks and in hoppers.
The salesmen looked haggard, the shoppers looked worse
As credit cards flew out of wallet and purse.
There were no joyful sounds of carolers singing,
And the only bells heard were cash registers ringing.
‘Twas the Day after Christmas
And all thru the malls
People are returning gifts not wanted or needed,
Unwanted clothing and bad fitting shoes,
You don’t have a receipt
So store credit you choose.
On Target, on Macy’s and Home Depot too,
On Costco and Walgreens,
Don’t forget Off Broadway Shoes.
Long lines are the worst
When you want to be home,
So “come again” as the cashier says,
You return with a
“Have a Good New Year!”
'Twas the day after Christmas
When all through the place,
There were arguments and depressions,
Even mom had a long face.
The stockings hung empty and the house was a mess.
The new clothes didn’t fit and dad was under stress.
The family was irritable and the children no one could please,
Because the instructions for the swing set were written in Chinese.
The bells no longer jingle and no carolers came around.
The sink was stacked with dishes and the tree had turned brown.
The stores were full of people returning things that fizzle and fail.
And the shoppers were discouraged because
Everything they bought was on half price sale.
‘Twas the day after Christmas
And the spirit of joy had disappeared,
The only hope on the horizon is twelve bowl games in the New Year!
The true biblical Jesus was born to save His people from their sins; thirty-three years after His birth He was crucified on a cross and shed His blood to redeem sinners; He died on that cross and was buried; He arose from the grave on the third day and He lives today; those who know Him as personal Lord and Savior worship Him as the only true God, Savior, Lord, and King every day of the year. True worship is, ‘Acknowledging that Jesus is God; He is greater – worth more – and, by consequence, is to be feared, adored, and obeyed. Worship is giving ourselves completely to God and being mastered by Him.’
Wake-up, Pastors! Wake-up, Christians!
