Deafening Silence

The Wake-Up Herald

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. Romans 13:11-14

A Deafening Silence

By Robert McCurry

Today, 4,000 innocent precious lives of unborn babies were snuffed out by abortion in America. Their arms and legs were torn from their bodies, their skulls crushed. One and a half million times each year our “civilized” society will take an innocent life.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

In less than a single generation, homosexuality has gone from something almost universally understood to be sinful, to something now declared to be the moral equivalent of heterosexuality—and deserving of both legal protection and public encouragement. In 40 years, homosexuals have gone from the closet to the government / public school classroom, to prime time TV, to government leaders, and now to the clergy.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

The suicide rate among 15-to-19-year-olds has increased 200 percent in the past two decades. Teenage alcohol consumption and drug addiction is the highest ever.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

The number of unmarried couples living together has soared ten-fold since 1970: There were 430,000 couples cohabiting in March, 1960 and a staggering 4.2 million doing so in March, 1998. Census estimates there are 6 million cohabiting couples today.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

The United States has the highest divorce rate on the globe by a wide margin. The proportion of children living in single-parent homes more than doubled between 1970 and 2010 from 12% to 27%. One in five white children lives in a single-parent home. Since 1960, the proportion of white children living in single-parent homes has increased from 7 percent to 21 percent.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

Christian morality cannot be taught in America’s government / public schools, but atheistic immorality can. Bibles cannot be distributed, but condoms can. A Christian pastor cannot address the class, but a witch or a transvestite can. Jesus cannot be mentioned, but Muhammad can. The Bible cannot be read, but the Koran can.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent…

Hardcore pornography outlets outnumber McDonald’s in America. Since 1960, the pornography industry has grown by more than 10,000 percent. Six hundred thousand children between the ages of 3 and 18 are involved in child pornography. Over 6,000 adult videos are produced every year. Pornography has become an eight billion dollar business. Consequently, rape has increased 700 percent in the last 50 years, and every year a majority of all sexual assault victims were reported as children under 18, many of these attacks were made on children under 12.

Rock and rap music fills the media with music and images which legitimize rape, murder, group sex, sado-masochism, adultery, satanic worship, homosexuality, alcohol and drug abuse, etc.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

The entertainment media in America offers the average American TV viewer 14,000 references to sex a year, 81 percent of which are outside of marriage. Add to that the multitude of homosexual characters preaching tolerance of what God declares as an abomination. Add to that the extreme violence and sexual immorality, the greed and the paganism. Program after program, movie after movie contains immoral, ungodly, destructive messages that grow more gritty and graphic with each passing day…

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

A majority of states now have lotteries. We have eliminated the crime of gambling by making it legal and putting it under the control of the state.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

The networks make a mockery of Christians, the Christian faith and Christian values with nearly every show they air. Greed, materialism, violence, sexual immorality is standard fare. Program after program, movie after movie contains anti-Christian episodes and plots. News articles condescendingly refer to the “fundamental, right wing Christians.” Those who speak out for the sacredness of life and Christian morality are branded as extremists.

And 300,000 pulpits are silent.

While men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way (Matt 13:25).

Because pastors and Christians have remained silent in proclaiming ‘Thus saith the Lord’ of God’s Word and the self-restraining precepts of God’s perfect law taught previous generations of our ancestors, America now faces a frontal attack on Biblical truth and Christianity.

Society has turned a cold shoulder to the Biblical building blocks of our culture replacing the pillars of decency with the neon lights of self-expression. ‘If it feels good, do it’ has spawned a generation that does everything because it feels good. ‘Just say no’ lost out to ‘anything goes.’ The genie is out of the bottle and no matter how hard we try to train our children in doing the right thing, our grandchildren will share a world with a generation of humanistic-educated citizens who believe there is no such thing as the right thing.

Silent pulpits have produced a Godless people that have produced a Godless culture. We have sown to the wind and we are reaping the whirlwind.

Thankfully, there are some pulpits, although in the minority, that are not silent but, “Cry aloud and spare not; lift up their voice like a trumpet and tell the people their transgression!” (Isa 58:1;See Isaiah 59 for the list of transgressions.) These faithful pulpits likewise proclaim, “Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear” (Isa 59:1).

As goes the pulpit, so goes the church; as goes the church, so goes the nation. America’s current catastrophic moral, political, and economic crisis can be traced back to passive, silent, inert pastors and ‘Christians.’

God called His pastors to proclaim His Word, to be vigilant watchmen sounding forth the clear clarion trumpet of God’s Word, calling both Christians and non-Christians alike to repentance; calling out God’s people to war against the host of evil advancing all around us. America’s pastors, with a few exceptions, have failed in this responsibility before God, and our country is paying a dire price for that failure.

This failure must now be countered by ‘Thus saith the LORD’ preaching of God’s Word without compromise or apology “That men may know that God, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, is the most high over all the earth” (Ps 83:18); God’s Word is true! Jesus Christ is the only true God, Lord, and Savior; He is holy, completely sovereign and commands all to repent or perish! He alone is the answer to America’s humanly unsolvable ‘societal meltdown.’

Wake-up, Pastors! Wake-up, Christians!
